Holy Basil - Secret of Happy and Healthy Life

Holy Basil is an aromatic plant from the mint family. It is closely related to the Sweet Basil which is a staple element of Italian and Asian cooking, holy basil has a much richer history. This plant has its original connection with Indian subcontinent and is throughout the South east Asian areas. It is most popular in India, from around 3000 years but has successfully gained popularity in USA and other countries as well.


Medicinal Instinct:
There are many cultures around the world which use this herb mainly for its medicinal properties. For example -- In India, holy basil is a sacred plant and is known as 'tulsi', which means “incomparable”. It has a lot of healing power and is mostly used in cases of stomach problems, to treat insect bites, common cold and cough, flu, to maintain mental balance, to increase immunity, to increase stamina, treats various skin diseases and much more. It also acts as an energy booster.

Some Diseases and Basil's effects


1. Holy Basil as an Immunity Booster:
Weak immune system is never wanted by anyone. More weak the immune system, more are the chances you fall ill. Tulsi, which was used widely in India until now is popular in many countries. Doctors and researchers have identified recently that basil leaves have anti flu properties. The overall defense mechanism i.e. the immune system of the body can be well maintained by intake of basil leaves in any of the possible forms. It can be taken in different forms like in the form of tea, sprinkle over salad, add to your smoothies, add to your daily cooking veggies and even in the form of tonics. Most of the people prefer tonics as it is the easiest way to intake tulsi and stay fit and healthy.

2. Prevents Kidney Stones: Kidney stones are a common problem these days. Most of the doctors also suggest their patients to have basil juice mixed with honey. This helps in strengthening the functioning of kidneys and also dissolves stones naturally.

3. Skin Conditions: Due to the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of Basil leaves, it prevents the growth of bacteria which are responsible for various skin conditions like: dark spots, ring worm, acne, black heads, white patches and many others. These anti bacterial properties help in blood purification and toxic elimination.

4. Anti-Aging: No one wants to look old prior to their ages. Some diseases or problems may make your skin look dull and more wrinkles may appear. This will make you look old, which you'd never want to, especially ladies. Mental tension and depression is the main reason behind it. Basil leaves are extraordinary stress relievers. Also, it acts as an antioxidant killing many harmful molecules and prevents damage caused by some free radicals in heart, brain and liver.

Holy Basil leaves are really beneficial but these must also be taken with some precautions. In a few cases these may be harmful like if they are taken along with sugar lowering drugs, diabetic patient may feel a sudden decrease in the blood sugar levels.
