MANJISTA THE CLASSICAL AYURVEDIC HERB

Manjista is an important medicine in Ayurveda and also a famous botanical dye. Literal meaning of the word Manjista is extreme. Like its name manjista signifies extreme action of a herb in vitality, vigour and passion just like its red colour. This Ayurvedic herb is discussed in three classical texts Charaka Samhita, Astanga hridaya also in Susrutha Samhita.

The botanical name of Manjista is Rubia cordifolia. Cordi, a girl's name in Latin means "heart" indicating the shape of its leaf. It belongs to the family Rubiaceae. It is a perennial traditionally grown in the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Morphology

Manjista is a herbaceous climber. The stem is long, rough, and slightly woody at the base and quadrangle. The plant has a long and cylindrical root with red-colored bark. Its flowers are white, or greenish, whereas fruits are globose, dark purple, or, black. Stems have a long, woody, and rough base.

Useful parts

The stem and roots are mainly used in Ayurvedic medicine. The roots provide a variety of reds, from orange to bright red.
