Our Views on Fraser Health’s Public Health Warning on Ayurvedic Medicine

Fraser Health recently issued a public health warning about potential risks associated with some Ayurvedic medicines and opium-containing products, highlighting concerns about possible contamination with heavy metals. This warning followed two recent cases of lead poisoning potentially linked to these products.

However, no specific Ayurvedic products nor brands were identified in the warning, leaving consumers confused and uncertain. It's important to note that heavy metals can also be found in many everyday items, including spices, condiments, candies, and cosmetics.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of natural healing, offers a wealth of knowledge on maintaining health and wellness. Thus, such general statements and singling out Ayurveda unfairly and negatively impacts a medical science practiced generations after generations with a rich history of over 5,000 years.

CBC News’ interview with Neelam Toprani

In an attempt to provide clarity on this matter, Neelam Toprani, our CEO and Founder graced CBC News request with an interview as seen below:

Note from CBC: This video was edited after publication to make it clear that the products shown in the video are registered with Health Canada and are not among the products that sparked a warning from the Fraser Health authority.

In the interview, Arun Garg MD explained how contaminations happen and highlighted the importance of knowing your products and ensuring it is approved for sale. Neelam and Pinki Wong, a reporter from CBC, emphasized the importance of NPN. Products that carry the Health Canada’s eight-digit number signifies that product has been authorized for sale ensuring its safety, efficacy and quality.

How then should one choose the Right Product?

We acknowledge your freedom to choose products that work for you, be it Ayurveda or any other modality. However, in general, here are the key points to consider:

  1. Health Canada Approval: Look for the eight-digit NPN from your chosen brand. This signifies that the product has secured Health Canada’s approval, indicating it has been rigorously tested for safety, efficacy, and quality.
  2. Testing and Quality Assurance: Opt for products that undergo extensive testing for contaminants such as heavy metals.
  3. Reputable Brands: Trust brands with a history of quality and adherence to regulatory standards.
